The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has prepared a plan to launch electric busses in Islamabad in collaboration with the Federal Government of Pakistan. The project aims to fulfil the increasing transportation needs of the Capital City . In this blog, we have compiled everything you need to know about the project including upcoming developments, routes, and much more.

Let’s begin!

About Electric Buses in Islamabad

Electric Bus, Islamabad, Pakistan
The electric buses are a ground breaking project for Pakistan

Electric busses in Islamabad is a ground-breaking project and will be one of the few projects in Pakistan that is focused on reducing carbon footprints from the city.

Funded by Skywell Automobiles, a Chinese auto manufacturer, the electric buses in Islamabad and their launch is planned in various phases. The first phase of the launch includes bringing 30 buses into service which will cater to around 48,000 commuters on a daily basis.

One of the many advantages of the electric buses, the most highlighted one will remain that it has extremely low maintenance costs, as compared to other diesel and fueled vehicles. The electric bus project will prove to be a great development for the economy. It is said to save up to 30,000 barrels of fuel, which results in saving PKR 500 million annually.

Routes of the Electric Bus Project

The Islamabad-Rawalpindi Metro Bus Service runs on a single route at the moment, starting from Saddar and operating all the way to Pak Secretariat – the public transport connects the twin cities. While the metro service is a state-of-the-art facility, it still doesn’t cover a large number of areas within the capital city.

Here’s where the Electric Bus Project comes into play. As per CDA, there will be six electric bus routes operating around the city including:

  • From Bhara Kahu to Marghazar Zoo (via Dhokri and F-6)
  • From Rawat to Faisal Mosque
  • From Tarnol to F-9 Park
  • From GT Road (close to the Railway Carriage Factory) to IJ Principal Road metro station
  • From Nilor Chowk to Koral Chowk
  • From Lehtrar Chowk to Aabpara

Eco-Friendly Transportation

One of the major benefits of electric buses include the bus being entirely powered by electricity which automatically reduces the carbon emissions from its engine. This project is considered a game-changing contribution for preserving the environment.

In Pakistan, over 40 percent of the pollution is caused by fueled vehicles.

CDA and the government are hoping that the electric bus project in Islamabad will pave the way for the future of electric cars in Pakistan. The project aims to convert almost 30 percent of the cars on the road into electric-powered vehicles till the year 2030.

Car Charging Station

The government has planned to convert the abandoned gas stations around the city into charging stations. In addition to the government’s plan, one of the greatest developments in the regard of charging stations is launching an EV charging station by Pakistan State Oil. The charging station is located in the F-7 Markaz, which features the latest electric vehicle (EV) charger.

In this blog, we have discussed the electric buses in Islamabad in detail, highlighting the key features, routes, it’s benefits, and more.
