Right after KMC’s Green Karachi Campaign, another good news has been making rounds across the country. In the past week, Pakistan partnered with the (UNEP) to observe and host World Environment Day. It is a big step to highlight the importance of the ‘ecosystem’, focusing on setting our relation with nature.

About World Environment Day 2021
World Environment Day happens every five years in June. It is the United Nations’ flagship day to spread awareness about the importance of the environment globally. Over time, it has grown exponentially to be the largest global platform for public outreach awareness towards environmental factors. However, the importance of the event can be judged by the fact that it is celebrated by millions of people worldwide.
Considering the lack of environmentally-friendly initiatives, Pakistan’s Adviser to the Prime Minister of Climate, Malik Amin Aslam, acknowledged the urgency and is concerned about this fact. He joined UNEP executive director Inger Anderson to stop the degradation of ecosystems worldwide.

Commenting on the importance of this campaign, UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen said and we quote, “Pakistan has shown real leadership in efforts to restore the country’s forests; we are grateful for their commitment to host World Environment Day 2021 and lead the charge for all nations to restore our damaged ecosystems through the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration”.
As per the plan, the theme of World Environment Day 2021 will be ecosystem restoration, building a good relationship with nature will be the primary focus of this initiative.

How Will Pakistan Benefit by Hosting the World’s Environment Day?
One of the most afforestation efforts led by Prime Minister Imran Khan, the Pakistani Government, is planning to expand the county’s forest to its maximum capacity. Billions of trees are ready for plantation over five years. This campaign is all about rejuvenating the forest life in Pakistan. Including all the areas that require greenery, such as schools, parks, and all the areas where planting trees is necessary.
Although to maintain the campaign’s steadiness, Pakistan has launched an ecosystem restoration fund that will support this cause and facilitate the transition towards environmental resilience.
This initiative is ready to help close the climate emission gap significantly by 2030. Pakistan is already suffering from the heatwaves; every year, summer’s warmth gets more deadly because of the little plantations. After all, replanting will help in reducing the expected devastating effects of decreased forest life.
