Stay Safe Through The Tremors

Yesterday’s 5.6-magnitude earthquake in the northern side of Pakistan must have gotten you thinking, how can you stay safe during an earthquake and how can you keep your home safe?

Although we cannot plan ahead for any natural disaster, here are some excellent tips to keep your house protected in these trying times.

Planning Ahead

  • The first and foremost thing to do is to check if you live in an earthquake prone area. You can get this information from the internet.
  • Find out what your community has in place for disaster management.
  • Make sure that everyone in your household, even children, know where all the gas valves and electrical mains are. This will help if they have to be shut down during an emergency.
  • Keep an emergency kit accessible.

Inside the House

  • Install a gas shut-off mechanism.
  • Check all nuts and bolts regularly for any loosening.
  • Keep your appliances secure by placing them on proper mounts and bases.
  • Safety film installation on windows and glass doors can keep them safe.
  • If a quake is expected, strap large appliances and furniture to the walls using safety cables and straps.

Structure of the House

  • Reinforcing concrete walls, brick walls, and stone work can safeguard your construction.
  • Install Steel Plates and Anchor Bolts between the structure and the foundation of the house.
